Every Bite: Local families reduce waste, save money, and fall in love with their food again

In February, we ran our first-ever Every Bite food appreciation programme here in Hauraki! Participants came together to share ideas, learn new skills, and rethink the way they shop, store, and use their food. The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive. One participant said,

"Loved! This programme is absolutely designed for someone like me who was too busy in the young child stage to add any more to my mental load. And had picked up bad habits. I am now able to see beyond."

Every Bite is designed to be practical, achievable, and inspiring – not overwhelming. Whether it was connecting with others, becoming more mindful about food, or picking up new tricks to save money and reduce waste, participants told us they walked away with real change.

"I knew that food waste is an issue and thought I was doing a fairly good job – wrong! Through the programme, I've become more organised – knowing what I have in my pantry, fridge, and freezer, keeping all three tidy, and online shopping have made a huge difference. My grocery bills have gone down quite a bit!"

Led and facilitated by Sarah Holmes, the February programme proved that small actions can make a big difference – not just for the environment, but also for household budgets.

"Waste of food is about dollar savings."
"Awareness about how much food I am wasting that I don’t actually need to be."

This May, we're back for another round of Every Bite – and it’s bigger and better!

We’re kicking off with a stunning lunch and workshop at Falls Retreat on Sunday, 4 May. You'll get four weeks of tips, tools, and food-saving actions to do at home. We wrap up with a celebration event on 1 June — with pizza, salad, and chips from Falls Retreat! Plus, everyone who completes the programme goes in the draw to win a Falls Retreat workshop voucher (valued at $165).

Whether you join solo, with friends, or with a group from work, Every Bite is a fun, meaningful experience — and a great way to create new habits together.
